Systematic Market Internals
NASDAQ 100 (QQQ)
Price Action: QQQ closed at 714.88, up 0.87% on Friday’s session but still sitting 0.57% below last week's close. Friday’s green candle is real. The story underneath it is not.
Absolute Breadth: The two planes are in different universes today. EW remains deep in Bear Liquidation at 13.2%, only one in eight QQQ stocks holding a confirmed uptrend. MCW is in Bull Consolidation at 31.8%. The Soldiers are in a rout while the Generals hold a completely different line.
Distortion Context: The spread jumped from 13.2% yesterday to 18.6% in the last session, resulting in the Mega Cap Illusion classification. MCW climbed 3.7 points while EW shed 1.7, meaning the heavyweights accelerated upward while the average stock kept deteriorating underneath them. In a 100-stock index, that's all it takes. A handful of names did the work the other ninety refused to do.
Weekly Context: The weekly frame is moving in the same direction as the daily, just more slowly. Both EW (32.6%) and MCW (48.1%) still sit in Bull Consolidation, but the weekly spread widened from 12.7% at last week's close to 15.5% now, crossing into Mega-Cap Illusion territory on the weekly timeframe as well. The daily EW reading of 13.2% is deep in the Washout Zone, a level where historically selling exhaustion has preceded the market's more violent relief rallies. The weekly hasn't broken down yet, but it's no longer the clean consolidation it looked like a week ago.
S&P 500 (SPY)
Price Action: SPY closed at 764.29, up 0.85% on Friday but 0.77% below last week's close. A green tape across 500 stocks carries a heavier burden of proof than QQQ's, and the internals don't meet it.
Absolute Breadth: Only 14.2% of S&P 500 stocks sit in a confirmed uptrend on an equal-weight basis, Bear Liquidation, deep and broad. MCW holds at 35.3%, Bull Consolidation. When a regime split like this spans 500 companies, it isn't a handful of laggards dragging the average down. It's a systemic condition across most of the U.S. equity landscape.
Distortion Context: The Mega-Cap Illusion in SPY isn't new and the gap is widening, up from 19.9% on Thursday to 21.1% on Friday. MCW actually declined session over session, from 36.5% to 35.3%, and EW fell too, from 16.6% to 14.2%. Both planes got worse. The index rose anyway, pulled up by the gravity of its largest constituents.
Weekly Context: SPY's weekly structure flips the daily picture entirely. At the weekly level, EW (35.5%) leads MCW (26.6%) by 8.9 points, a Selective Strength reading, average stocks outpacing the heavyweights. That's the opposite of what the daily plane shows, where MCW is running 21 points ahead of EW. Same index, same week: mega-cap dominance on the daily plane, mega-caps lagging on the weekly one, and 500 stocks caught in the middle.
