Systematic Market Internals
NASDAQ 100 (QQQ)
Price Action: QQQ closed at 713.44, up 0.35% on Friday’s session, but sits 2.41% below last week's close. The session's green print arrived against a backdrop where the internal structure tells a more complicated story.
Absolute Breadth: The two planes are sitting in different regimes. EW holds Bull Consolidation at 37.5%, the average QQQ stock is neutral, not broken. MCW sits in Bear Liquidation at 38.7%, meaning the heavyweights are mathematically in worse shape than the rank and file.
Distortion Context: The daily timeframe spread reads +1.2%, a Healthy Sync number on paper. But that tight alignment is deceptive with MCW in Bear Liquidation while EW holds Bull Consolidation. The spread narrowed from 1.8% yesterday, and it was EW doing the work (up a full point) while MCW barely moved (up 0.4). The average stock is carrying the incremental healing of the volatility that happened earlier in the week, not the mega-caps.
Weekly Context: Zoom out and the picture cleans up. Both EW (39.8%) and MCW (47.6%) sit in Bull Consolidation at the end of the week, with a Selective Strength spread of 7.8%, mega-caps still leading the weekly structure. The daily regime split doesn't exist on this timeframe; both planes are in the same camp. Historically, when the daily MCW regime slips into Bear Liquidation while the weekly MCW holds Bull Consolidation, the weekly structure tends to be the more durable signal, though the daily damage still shows up in price along the way, as this week's 2.41% drawdown confirms.
S&P 500 (SPY)
Price Action: SPY closed at 765.72, up 0.41% on the last session of the week, but trails last week's close by 1.37%, a shallower hole than QQQ's 2.41%. That gap in damage matters once you look at what's happening underneath.
Absolute Breadth: SPY's MCW plane broke into Bear Liquidation today, flipping from Bull Consolidation at 48.8% Thursday down to 48.2% Friday, while EW (38.0%) holds Bull Consolidation, essentially flat. Across 500 stocks, a regime flip on the cap-weighted plane carries more weight than the same move in QQQ's smaller ticker spread. It takes broader deterioration among the heavyweights to result in the phase shift.
Distortion Context: A 10.2 point Selective Strength spread where the index's largest names are propping the headline price while the broader participation lags behind. The irony: the index gained on the day, but the group of stocks doing the pushing just got reclassified into Bear Liquidation. The gain is being written by a shrinking, weakening group of tickers.
Weekly Context: The weekly timeframe delivers the sharpest contradiction in today's data. On a weekly basis, EW (39.3%) leads MCW (29.7%) by 9.6 points, Under-the-Surface Strength, the exact opposite of what the daily plane is showing. So the mega-caps are propping the daily print while the average stock is carrying the weekly load. Two competing stories running at once, and neither has resolved into a clean direction yet.
