Systematic Market Internals
NASDAQ 100 (QQQ)
Price Action: QQQ slipped 0.14% on Friday to close at 731.07, trimming a piece of Wednesday's 1.16% advance, but still holds a 1.11% gain on the week. The headline barely moved, and the internal structure moved even less.
Absolute Breadth: Both planes sit in Bull Consolidation. EW reads 42.0%, MCW reads 45.3%, both in the Neutral/Transitioning band. The Generals and the Soldiers are fighting the same fight at roughly the same intensity: neither leading, neither breaking down.
Distortion Context: The Distortion Score landed at +3.2%, a Healthy Sync reading, the tightest alignment the two planes can show. What stands out is the compression: yesterday's spread was 3.8%, today it narrowed as MCW gave back a touch of ground (45.5% to 45.2%) while EW ticked fractionally higher. The mega-caps eased off while the average stock quietly held its footing.
Weekly Context: Zooming out, the live week carries an 8.6% Distortion Score, Selective Strength, with EW essentially flat at 40.3% against last week's 40.2% close. MCW pulled back from 50.1% to 48.9%, narrowing the weekly gap from 9.9% but not closing it. The Generals are still doing the heavy lifting on the weekly plane, though their grip is loosening while the Soldiers stand still.
S&P 500 (SPY)
Price Action: SPY fell 0.20% on Friday to 776.34, giving back a slice of Wednesday's 0.70% gain, and holds a modest 0.40% gain on the week. The price is quiet. The wiring underneath it is not.
Absolute Breadth: EW sits at 46.5%, Bull Consolidation, Neutral/Transitioning. MCW jumped to 56.5%, crossing into the Strong/Healthy band. Across 500 stocks, the average name is mid-range while the heavyweight end of the index is confirming uptrends at a meaningfully higher rate.
Distortion Context: The daily Distortion Score surged from 3.8% (Healthy Sync) to 10.0% (Selective Strength) in a single session, driven entirely by MCW acceleration rather than EW deterioration. EW climbed from 44.6% to 46.5% while MCW vaulted from 48.4% to 56.5%. That 8.1 point MCW jump represents a broad-based surge in large-cap momentum that the flat headline price completely obscures.
Weekly Context: The weekly structure tells the opposite story. EW leads MCW by 9.9 points on the weekly timeframe, with the average SPY stock (38.7%) running well ahead of the mega-cap cohort (28.8%), an Under-the-Surface Strength setup that has held since last week's close. So the daily plane shows the mega-caps surging while the weekly plane still shows them lagging the broader 500. Two timeframes, two opposite leadership stories, running at the same time. Historically, this kind of daily/weekly inversion has marked phases of internal rotation rather than durable directional commitment.
